There’s something captivating about the Shiba Inu that goes beyond their undeniable beauty. It’s in their proud stance, their fox-like features, and their spirited yet reserved nature. My journey with Shibas began with curiosity, but it quickly turned into a lifelong passion. Here’s why I fell in love with this remarkable breed and what makes them such a unique part of my life.
A Breed with Character
Shibas are not your typical dog—they’re independent, intelligent, and a little mischievous. They have an innate confidence that commands attention wherever they go. For me, their strong-willed nature was both a challenge and a joy. Training a Shiba requires patience, but once they trust you, their loyalty is unmatched.
The Beauty of Tradition
As Japan’s oldest and most beloved breed, the Shiba Inu carries a rich cultural history. They were originally bred for hunting, and their agility and sharp instincts reflect that heritage. Owning a Shiba feels like being connected to a legacy—a piece of history that still thrives today.
The Quirks That Make Them Special
Shibas are full of personality. They’re known for their “Shiba scream,” an ear-piercing sound that they make when excited or displeased. It’s both hilarious and unforgettable. They’re also known for their meticulous grooming habits, often compared to cats. These quirks make life with a Shiba endlessly entertaining.
My First Shiba
I’ll never forget the moment I met my first Shiba at a local dog show. Their piercing gaze and dignified demeanor drew me in instantly. Despite their aloof exterior, I discovered a loving and affectionate companion underneath. That experience solidified my desire to dedicate my life to this breed.
Our journey began with two remarkable dogs who couldn’t have been more different. Our first Shiba was Ch Risingsuns Tenshi (pictured below), affectionately known as Angel. We purchased her from the late Yvonne Cobham in the early 2000s, and she truly lived up to her name. From day one, Angel defied every stereotype of the breed. Her recall was impeccable, she never placed a foot wrong, and she seemed to understand exactly what was expected of her. She was the perfect introduction to Shibas—an easygoing companion who made it impossible not to fall in love with the breed.
Then came Gr Ch Risingsuns Shinto Ki, or Sumo. Sumo was everything Angel wasn’t—independent to the extreme, stubborn, and unyielding in his ways. If Sumo had been our first Shiba, we might not have continued with the breed! He was challenging in ways we weren’t prepared for, and yet, he taught us some of the most valuable lessons about Shiba Inus, training, and ourselves.
Sumo’s strong-willed nature pushed us to dive deeper into understanding the breed’s unique temperament. He reminded us that patience, respect, and adaptability are key when working with such intelligent and independent dogs. While Angel made us fall in love with Shibas, Sumo gave us a true appreciation for the breed’s complexities.
Looking back, I realise how much both Angel and Sumo shaped our journey with Shiba Inus. They laid the foundation for everything we’ve learned and continue to do at Orienta Shiba Inu. From Angel’s perfection to Sumo’s challenges, they taught us that every Shiba is unique, with their own personality and quirks that make them unforgettable
Building Orienta Shiba Inu
When we started Orienta Shiba Inu, our goal was to immerse ourselves in the beauty and tradition of the Shiba Inu breed. Part of this journey has been the incredible experience of participating in dog shows, where the essence of the breed truly shines.
Dog shows are not just about competition—they’re about celebrating the unique traits and heritage of breeds like the Shiba Inu. Walking into the ring with a dog I’ve raised is always a special moment. It’s a culmination of countless hours of training, bonding, and care. Seeing our dogs confident stance and graceful movement in the ring reminds me why I fell in love with this breed in the first place.
Another deeply rewarding aspect of this journey has been embracing the responsibility of ethical breeding. To me, breeding isn’t about numbers; it’s about ensuring that every Shiba is healthy, well-tempered, and true to the breed standard. It’s about taking the time to understand the lineage, prioritise health, and raise puppies in an environment that encourages their natural curiosity and confidence.
The joy of seeing a Shiba thrive—whether in the show ring or simply as a beloved companion—brings an immense sense of fulfillment. It’s a reminder that the effort we put into honouring this breed’s legacy has ripple effects far beyond the kennel.
Why Shibas Will Always Have My Heart
The Shiba Inu is not a breed for everyone—they require understanding, patience, and a sense of humor. But for those who take the time to know them, the rewards are immeasurable. Their intelligence, beauty, and unwavering spirit make them truly one-of-a-kind.
Owning and breeding Shibas has taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, respect, and love. They’ve enriched my life in ways I could never have imagined, and I’m proud to share this incredible breed with the world through Orienta Shiba Inu.
